PUNE: NCP’s Sharad Pawar group will engage a team of lawyers to give legal support to its supporters to shield them from cases registered out of political vendetta.
The camp’s seniors said the party workers, especially the younger generation, wanted some support from the party while they demonstrated on streets or took up issues on social media, after Sharad Pawar told his supporters in a recently held workshop to be more aggressive on all social media platforms. Therefore, the party has decided to form a legal team of lawyers. It will fight for the supporters in courts if cases related to political statements are filed against them.
“Our party’s legal and social media cells will jointly work out the strategy to make sure that our party workers get the legal backing. If our party workers are unnecessarily harassed by BJP, the party will fight legal battles on behalf of them,” MLA Rohit Pawar said.
The Sharad Pawar camp of NCP claimed that since it had not joined hands with BJP, the ruling party would misuse agencies against them aggressively.
“Politics has not remained healthy anymore. There is a political vendetta against the opposition parties. BJP is using all possible investigating agencies to harass their leaders. As the election is nearing, we suspect that cases would be filed against our supporters to demoralise them. But we have given them the assurance that the party will stand by them and take the responsibility of providing legal aid to them,” Prashant Jagtap, the president of Sharad Pawar camp’s Pune unit, told TOI.
The party leaders claimed that the ruling party had started misusing power in the state. “Police booked one of our supporters from Pune for his one-and-a-half years old social media post and he was summoned to Gadchiroli. It was only to harass him and to send a message to others to refrain from supporting our party. Now, we will consider every such case as a case against the party and not against an individual,” Jagtap said. — Anurag Bende
